Bike Love News #4 - June 26, 2022

Happy Sunday and welcome to Bike Love News #4. The latest edition from my little side project Proton Cycles, working to improve lives one bike at a time. Dozens of local kids with disabilities learned how to ride bikes during week-long bike camp via WFTS Tampa Bay There's something about the freedom of riding a bike that everyone can appreciate it. And it's great to see organizations like this one working to make sure that everyone really does get to experience it. This bike camp in Tampa helped 75 kids with various disabilities enjoy the thrill of bike riding. Awesome! 'I've gone from stealing bikes to giving them back to the community' via  Coshocton Tribune A gentleman name Phil Hammersley started a program he calls Bike Angel in 2018. He had recently been released from incarceration looking for something positive to do. A friend had about 20 bikes he was planning to scrap, and Phil took them, fixed them up and donated them. So far he's donated close to 700 b...

Bike Love News #3 - Father's Day Edition

Happy Monday! I was a little distracted having fun on Father's Day, so we're a day late. But welcome to issue #3 of Bike Love News. Three in a row - I'm actually a little surprised! A Father's Day e-bike retrospective via Aspen Daily News For some reason e-bikes seem a bit controversial. That the idea of using an assisted bike is not really "biking." I dunno, I figure anything that gets more people out on a bike is a good thing. Lorenzo Semple shares his perspective on e-bikes, and biking in general, with fondness and a touch of nostalgia. A four-mile, car-free bike path that winds its way through parks, beaches and under bridges via DigBoston I was not expecting this headline to be coming from Boston! But apparently East Boston (Eastie to those in the know) has developed into quite a cycling community. And Boston Bike Rental offers a range of fun biking options. Tandems, e-bikes, even Surrey cycles. Very cool. Data gathering app could make roads safer for cy...

Ride a Bright Green Bike with Community bike share program in Nebraska via NewsChannelNebraska The community of Alliance Nebraska, located in the panhandle, has introduced a new bike share program.  Gently used bikes have been tuned-up, painted bright green, and each have a reflective sticker indicating it’s part of the Alliance Community Bike program. They are available at participating locations around the community. USPS is testing mail delivery bikes - and that's so cool! via TheDRIVE The Post Office is indeed testing e-bikes in Florida with 500 Wh units made by Montana-based Coaster Cycles . Sounds like the plan might be to try and replace some of the postal trucks - the NEW ones get  14.7 miles per gallon, which is an increas e over the outgoing 8.4-MPG Grumman LLV trucks that we’ve s...

Bike Love News #1 - June 5, 2022

Hello and welcome to issue #1 of Bike Love News. A weekly (hopefully) round up of fun, interesting, cool news of all the ways bikes make life better! Part of Proton Cycles - my little side gig trying to improve lives, one bike at a time. So, let's dive in! Why People Ride Their Bikes in Their Underwear Once a Month (In Warm Weather) in Pittsburgh Via Pittsburgh Magazine Why not?! This group ride was created to help promote body positivity.  Pittsburgh Underwear Bike Ride  is rolling into its 10th season this year and continues to gain more traction, with 130 to 170 people showing up for each ride, says Scott Kowalski, the event organizer. New E-Bike Library Comes to Buffalo via BuffaloRising This is pretty cool! An e-bike library!  Community members from the neighborhood can qualify to borrow an e-bike for free, or they can access a selection of donated bikes, which have been serviced and repaired. Pretty great way to help people out with the power of a bike. It's made po...
