Bike Love News #17 - November 27, 2022

It's been a while! Thank you for visiting this little blog and having a look around. The goal here is to share stories of the many ways bikes just make life better. Please let me know what you think - I'd appreciate the feedback.

A New Trail Will Make It Safer and Easier to Bike from Chicago to Michigan

Or...from Michigan to Chicago. Either way, this is pretty cool. Once complete, folks will be able to ride a paved, dedicated trail along the 58-mile Marquette Greenway which will use existing trails and new construction to connect Chicago’s Southeast Side with downtown New Buffalo, Michigan.

Bike Libraries Are Boosting Access to Bikes Across the U.S.

At Madison, Wisconsin’s nine public libraries, residents can check out books of all kinds, from hardbacks and paperbacks to ebooks and audiobooks. They can check out movies as DVDs and Blu-rays. And since last year, library card holders can also check out electric bicycles.
Madison’s public libraries are part of a growing number of bike libraries in cities and towns from coast to coast. A list of U.S. bike lending libraries curated by StreetsblogMASS reporter Grecia White documents 35 such programs, from Vermont to Texas. While they all look a little different and work a little differently, they all do the same thing — increase free access to bikes.

Study Finds Philly BikeShare Program Got More People Biking

via WHYY
Drexel University's Urban Health Collaborative collected data from 1,031 newly enrolled bikeshare members, and found that over time, individuals were cycling at an average of 20 minutes per day. “About 40% of the cohort had never been on a street bike or on a bike on the street in Philadelphia,” said Amy Auchincloss, associate professor at Drexel’s Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. I've read a number of articles like this and the common theme seems to be - make it easier for people to ride bikes and guess what? They'll ride bikes!

Children Given Give of Freedom Thanks to Richmond Non-profit REACHcycles

via WTVR
Richmond nonprofit REACHcycles gave the gift of independence and mobility to nearly two dozen children living with disabilities. The founder, a gentleman named James Howard, is a veteran with a distinct perspective. "As a quadriplegic with no hand function, it's just something that never entered my mind that I could ride a bike again." Howard said.

Logan's Biking Community Emphasizes Inclusion: Anyone Can Hop On A Bike

Students from Utah State University work at this local bike shop, helping people learn about bikes, and getting more people riding. They also donate bikes to community organizations such as Cache Refugee and Immigrant Connection, which helps immigrants build connection to their new communities.

Liv Cycling is exclusively devoted to designing and manufacturing bikes for women's physiology — from frame design and stiffness, to component design and selection, to positioning — in order to provide women with optimal comfort and efficiency on any kind of bike. And it's about more than bike design. Liv's partnership with Ladies AllRide is a natural progression of the movement of women toward sports like mountain biking. Having a community to welcome you, to walk you through any apprehensions, and to help you learn the skills you needs to achieve your goals is invaluable.

"Cycling Without Age" Movement Comes to Connecticut

The all-volunteer group formed in May. Using an e-bike with a side car, known as a trishaw, the group gives rides to people who are not able to ride a bicycle themselves. “Even though they may be in a different situation than they were 10 years ago, there is no reason we can’t seek adventures and opportunities for them to have a purposeful life," said Bonnie Pollard-Johnson, executive director of Academy Point at Mystic.
I LOVE the concept of the bike bus and it seems to keep growing and growing thanks in part to folks like Sam Balto, and these ladies from Chicago. Christina Hayford and Rebecca Resman have each organized bike buses in their respective neighborhoods.

Robotics Students Provide Smooth Bike Rides for Refugees and Youth in Need

Not only do students from all three high schools work together to solve robotics challenges, they also give back to the community through their energetic work with Upcycle Bikes. The organization provides refurbished used adult bicycles to refugees served by Bethany Christian Services, as well as to the AYA Youth Collective serving 14- to 24-year-olds in need of housing and stability.

Happy Monday! I was a little distracted having fun on Father's Day, so we're a day late. But welcome to issue #3 of Bike Love News. Three in a row - I'm actually a little surprised!
