Hello and thank you for taking a moment to check out Bike Love News. It's a round up of interesting stories about bikes and how they just make life better. Hope you enjoy and please let me know what you think.

Community invited to finish painting bike friendly Kalamazoo mural

via WWMT
I shared a story about this mural last week and the story keeps getting better. Now the local residents have been invited to help finish painting the mural. Nice. It's intended to help create a more bike-friendly community, which of course is cool.

OK, Kalamazoo seems to be working toward becoming a very bike friendly city. As they're working through road construction, they're also installing pop-up bike lanes - new bike lanes that will eventually be protected by bollards. It's part of a pilot to track traffic patterns. The bike lanes will be plowed during winter - a big plus in our part of the world. Wonder what the gent at Not Just Bikes would think?

Temple University's urban bike team receives $100,000 donation

Temple University’s Urban Bike Team recently received a $100,000 donation to continue and expand its program that coaches urban youth in North Philadelphia through bike safety training, community bike rides and mentorship. The support is made possible by an anonymous donor and will be distributed in annual increments of $20,000 over the next five years. The funds will be used to donate 400 bikes each year to kids ages 7 to 13 years old who live in the neighboring ZIP codes that surround Temple’s campus.

Black transport project giving free bikes to Black trans people in need

The Black Transport Project gives away bikes to Black trans people in the Chicago area. Eligible people who do not have a bike can apply for a free one through this form. They will enter a raffle system, and matched applicants will be paired with a bike that fits their size.

Bike lanes coming to Woodward? What?

It seems there are communities ready to embrace bike riding. Woodward Avenue, one of THE major thoroughfares in Detroit (is it a stroad?), will be repaved through the City of Ferndale, and the City of Pleasant Ridge, with  six lanes (!) for vehicle traffic and one lane on each side to bikes, walkers and other people without vehicles. Well it's a start!
I love a good book-bike. Frederick County Public Libraries is bringing the library to patrons — on three wheels. The Book Bike is designed to reach people who might not be able to come to a library branch in person.

Thanks for reading!

Bike Love News #3 - Father's Day Edition

Happy Monday! I was a little distracted having fun on Father's Day, so we're a day late. But welcome to issue #3 of Bike Love News. Three in a row - I'm actually a little surprised! A Father's Day e-bike retrospective via Aspen Daily News For some reason e-bikes seem a bit controversial. That the idea of using an assisted bike is not really "biking." I dunno, I figure anything that gets more people out on a bike is a good thing. Lorenzo Semple shares his perspective on e-bikes, and biking in general, with fondness and a touch of nostalgia. A four-mile, car-free bike path that winds its way through parks, beaches and under bridges via DigBoston I was not expecting this headline to be coming from Boston! But apparently East Boston (Eastie to those in the know) has developed into quite a cycling community. And Boston Bike Rental offers a range of fun biking options. Tandems, e-bikes, even Surrey cycles. Very cool. Data gathering app could make roads safer for cy...
