Hello and welcome to Bike Love News, a (mostly) weekly roundup of stories about how bikes just make life better. Thanks for reading, and please let me know what you think.

Give a listen to this story featuring a man who refound his childhood love of cycling and used it to bring more folks to the sport.

Thrift center helps women's shelter replace bicycles

Domestic Harmony, which provides services to survivors of domestic violence, received a truckload of bikes of all different sizes, for both children and adults. “Women and children arrive there most often with nothing, sometimes without a vehicle,” Community Thrift officials said in a prepared statement. “Having the bikes gives the mothers and children a way to have outside therapy, exercise, and a way to get to the store or court.”

The Bike Circus helps folks restore and maintain their rides

OK, I just love the name of this bike shop - The Bike Circus. Very fun! And the quote from one of the founders -  73-year-old Jack Kelleher - is equally charming: "I've always felt that cycling was part of whatever keeps me, personally, young. I felt that my bicycle was my magical horse, and that as long as I kept riding my bike and stayed on my bike I'd be fine, but if I step off and touch the ground, I'll be like Oisin, I'll instantly turn into an old man and crumble into dust. My bike is my magic horse and I'm going to stay on it as long as I can."

Jason Hall of Slow Roll fame is back with a new Detroit ride

Slow Roll was a really cool event. And a great demonstration of the power of bicycles. Jason Hall, one of the founders of Slow Roll, has created a new group ride he's dubbed Electric Thursdays. The ride starts at his shop Electric Ave Bikes each Thursday at 6:30. Gotta check this out!

Buy a bike, support Habitat for Humanity. What a great deal!

Portland based WashCo Bikes has set up a partnership with Habitat For Humanity. Shop for a used bike and proceeds are split 50/50 between the bike shop and Habitat. Nice way to get a good bike and support a good cause. Visit ShopPDXRestore.org and click the “Bikes” category to see what's available.

Local artist paints mural for Bike Friendly Kalamazoo

A little art to go along with your bike riding. It's the work of artist Ellen VanderMyde who used to ride on the bike path that passes the mural. There are plans for an additional mural on the bike path. As if biking wasn't fun already, now you get art!

This cafe brings together folks from all different communities to share in good food and love of bikes. Cyclists, LGBTQ+ and BIPOC. The proprietor Chef Erin Vesey wanted to create a place where folks could gather and connect. They host multiple events at the cafĂ© including a co-working date for queer and BIPOC folk, movie nights, queer yoga, marketplaces and fundraisers. PLUS, all soda on the menu is listed as “pop" as it should be! Gotta check this out next time I get to LA.

Bike Love News #3 - Father's Day Edition

Happy Monday! I was a little distracted having fun on Father's Day, so we're a day late. But welcome to issue #3 of Bike Love News. Three in a row - I'm actually a little surprised! A Father's Day e-bike retrospective via Aspen Daily News For some reason e-bikes seem a bit controversial. That the idea of using an assisted bike is not really "biking." I dunno, I figure anything that gets more people out on a bike is a good thing. Lorenzo Semple shares his perspective on e-bikes, and biking in general, with fondness and a touch of nostalgia. A four-mile, car-free bike path that winds its way through parks, beaches and under bridges via DigBoston I was not expecting this headline to be coming from Boston! Tandems, e-bikes, even Surrey cycles. Very cool. Data gathering app could make roads safer for cy...
