Happy Labor Day weekend. Hope you're enjoying the final days of summer with a bike ride. By the way, if you're interested in more history on Labor Day, check out this article from the Department of Labor. Now on to Bike Love News. Earn-A-Bike program helps students learn to fix and earn a bike
The Bicycle Coalition of Maine launched it's Earn-A-Bike program in Bangor this summer. Students can choose to work on repairing their own bikes. Or, if they would like to earn a bike, they're provided a donated bike that's in need of some repair. Either way, they learn a bit more about bike maintenance and gain some valuable skills.
Why weight doesn't have to be a barrier to cycling

Biking is a great, low-impact form of cardiovascular exercise. But, the image of cycling is often of super fit, super skinny athletes in lycra. Which may not be the most welcoming image for every body type. So in this article, bike radar profiles four different riders who turned cycling into a fun, fitness lifestyle. Great example of the power of bikes!
Inside Twisted Spoke - A bike shop and apothecary
I'm really interested to see bike shops that merge their love of bikes with other points of passion. In this case, it's the story of two gents who found that biking helped them battle addiction, as did CBD. So they merged the two ideas into one to form The Twisted Spoke in Colorado Springs.

I included an article on Free Bikes 4 Kidz last week as well. They have chapters across the country. And they also have opportunities to volunteer to help fix up the donated bikes - I'm volunteering next month. Check them out.
So admittedly, nothing can fully make up for the trauma these kids and families have endured. But the goal here is worthy of support. OpGetOut is a Austin based non-profit that works to provide support to individuals dealing with loss, PTS, grief and stress through nature-based excursions. OpGetOut got started by organizing activities to help deal with the loss of two friends and first responders. And now hosts multiple events. You can learn more or donate at OpGetOut.
Community raises money for new bike after young autistic man's bike is stolen
It stinks but it happens. Bikes do get stolen. I think anyone stealing a bike is doing it just because. Cuz if they really wanted/needed a bike, I think there's probably a local org that'd help them get one. But, what do I know. Well, I know this story is pretty cool. A young autistic man had saved enough money to buy himself an e-bike that he used to commute to his job. Sadly, his bike was stolen while he was at work. People, strangers, got word of what had happened and began offering to donate funds to get him a new bike. What good people! Watch the video.
