Bike Love News #7 - July 31, 2022

Howdy. I'm back. Hope you weren't worried about me (😜). Last Sunday my wife and I celebrated 29 years of marriage. So instead of prepping this blog we went out to nice dinner! But now we're back with another edition part of Proton Cycles - my side hustle to improve lives one bike at a time. Let's dive in!

Women of Tour de France Femmes Blow My Mind!

via ME and GCN Racing
As a man raised by and raising women, I was totally blown away by the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift. The final stage today was simply ridiculous. I was watching these young women ride up the final slopes of 20% (#mindblownemoji) and I thought to myself "I'd just fall over." I know the economics of womens' sports in general make it hard. But boy, this was an incredible display of athletic ability.
Yes, yes and YES! I love discovering these fun local events where people combine their love of biking with their love of other things. In this case it's the Tour de Fat brought to you by the fine people at New Belgium Brewing. The event is scheduled for September 3 in Fort Collins, CO and then October 8 in Asheville, NC.. I think I may need to figure out an excuse to be in Colorado around this time. The event also includes

Hundreds hit the streets for 'special bike ride' in honor of Congressman John Lewis

The second annual Memorial Freedom Bike Ride was held where cyclists met and rode through the city of Atlanta. The event brought people together from all walks of life and brought awareness to the mission and vision of the John R. Lewis Legacy Institute, a new organization founded to amplify the message of the late Congressman to get in good and necessary trouble.
Why bikes? According to the U.S Department of Energy, 60% of the time Americans get in their car, they travel less than six miles. On electric bicycles that provide a low-speed pedal assist or throttle-actuated boost up to 20 or 28 mph, that distance is easily achievable in 15-20 minutes for most riders, likely without breaking a sweat. Even more, electric bicycles with cargo carrying capacity offer riders new ways of carrying small children, groceries, deliveries and so much more with ease, efficiency and the inherent joy and satisfaction that comes from riding a bike.

The organization Live In Peace in East Palo Alto does some really cool stuff for the local kids. A place to get help with homework. Learn how to become a bike mechanic. Join a group ride or even a race team. Support for students working through their plans after high school and assistance with college tuition. Great stuff. Learn more and support them by visiting Live In Peace.

Bike Love News #3 - Father's Day Edition

Happy Monday! I was a little distracted having fun on Father's Day, so we're a day late. But welcome to issue #3 of Bike Love News. Three in a row - I'm actually a little surprised! A Father's Day e-bike retrospective via Aspen Daily News For some reason e-bikes seem a bit controversial. That the idea of using an assisted bike is not really "biking." I dunno, I figure anything that gets more people out on a bike is a good thing. Lorenzo Semple shares his perspective on e-bikes, and biking in general, with fondness and a touch of nostalgia. A four-mile, car-free bike path that winds its way through parks, beaches and under bridges via DigBoston I was not expecting this headline to be coming from Boston! But apparently East Boston (Eastie to those in the know) has developed into quite a cycling community. And Boston Bike Rental offers a range of fun biking options. Tandems, e-bikes, even Surrey cycles. Very cool. Data gathering app could make roads safer for cy...
